Schools Day
The Buddhist Council of NSW is offering an opportunity for HSC Studies of Religion teachers and students to attend a Study Day as part of Buddhist Festival Month. Students and teachers will have the opportunity to investigate the extensive philosophies and practices of Buddhism.
This interactive Study Day will be held at the Sydney Masonic Centre Conference and Function Centre on Monday, 3 May 2010.
This practical day is targeted at the HSC Studies of Religion syllabus and structured to de-mystify Buddhism and express the essence of the faith in an accessible format that addresses students’ needs.
The program has been staggered so groups can participate in the theory and practical aspects of the day. Registration is a must.
The Schools Day is full! We have had a tremendous response and have now closed registrations. However, please contact us if you would like a teacher's resource to use within your classes. Don't forget, you can attend the free Buddhist Expo on Saturday and Sunday 1 & 2 May at the Sydney Masonic Centre, or register to be part of the MITRA Conference with speakers including Ven Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo. You can also go along to Reel to Real - The Sydney Buddhist Film Festival on 15 May at the Footbridge Theatre, Parramatta Road. A class group would enjoy many of the films and the discussions following. Explore our site and discover how Buddhist Festival Month can benefit your students!
Benefits to Students
Address curriculum
The content of the Study Day has been prepared with extensive reference to the NSW Board of Studies Studies of Religion (SOR) Syllabus.
The large space will contain detailed displays covering content outlined in both the Preliminary and HSC course.
The History of Buddhism, Core Teachings, Buddhist practices such as meditation, puja and pilgrimage as well as contemporary aspects of engaged Buddhism will all be represented. A meditation and ritual space will also be available for students to have first-hand experience of Buddhist meditation if they so wish..
Meet practitioners
During the day, students will have access to experienced Buddhist practitioners who will be on-hand to answer questions and provide a personal perspective on what it means to be a Buddhist living today.
The Expo space and day event will provide a valuable resource for students undertaking a Depth Study of Buddhism.
Explore issues
Special seminars led by experienced Buddhist teachers will clarify Buddhist responses to controversial ethical issues such as the environment, sexuality and bioethics.
Students can choose to attend one or more of these sessions throughout the day. Groups or individuals can nominate which seminar they wish to attend.
Gather resources
The Study Day is also an excellent opportunity to gather resources and expand your own professional reference library. Free books, audio recordings and CD ROMs packed with materials you can utilise for use in the classroom will be available to take away with you.
How the study day works
Bring your students for as much, or as little, of the day as you wish. However, it is essential to book for each seminar.
Staggered sessions enable groups and individuals to focus on different Seminar Topics whilst having time to enjoy the meditation space and the Expo hall.
